Dermoscopy CME module
BCC & its mimickers
Presented by Christian Navarrete, MD
Review of dermoscopic diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma highlights key criteria—ulceration, arborizing vessels, blue-gray globules/ovoid nests, spoke-wheel and leaf-like structures—and polarized signs (shiny white blotches/strands). Megaglobules signal calcification, correlate with high-risk subtypes, and help delineate Mohs margins. Clinical morphology plus dermoscopy improves subtyping. Recognize special sites and mimickers, especially melanoma.

Learning objectives
After completing this module, you should be able to:
- Identify the features associated with melanocytic and non-melanocytic malignancies and identify the features to help differentiate them from benign lesions.
- Outline a management approach for lesions, based on their clinical and dermoscopic morphology.
- Summarize the pivotal role of Dermoscopy as the gateway not only into improved diagnostic accuracy but also improvements in management, treatment, and appropriate use of ancillary tests/devices such as digital monitoring, reflectance confocal microscopy, and gene expression profiling.
This faculty-led module is part of the American Dermoscopy Certificate Program. Enrolled members watch the full lecture and claim CME credit on completion.
