Dermoscopy CME module
Approach to evaluating volar lesions
Presented by Richard Usatine, MD
Review of dermoscopic evaluation of volar lesions highlights ridge–furrow anatomy and pattern recognition. Parallel ridge pattern strongly suggests acral melanoma; parallel furrow, lattice, and typical fibrillar patterns favor nevi. Exceptions include ethnic melanosis and subcorneal hemorrhage. Apply wobble sign, BRAF checklist, invasion features, and size ≥7 mm to guide biopsy.

Learning objectives
After completing this module, you should be able to:
- Outline a logical framework for evaluating cutaneous lesions, nail lesions, hair disorders, rashes, and infestations.
- Identify the features associated with melanocytic and non-melanocytic malignancies and identify the features to help differentiate them from benign lesions.
- Outline a management approach for lesions, based on their clinical and dermoscopic morphology.
- Summarize the pivotal role of Dermoscopy as the gateway not only into improved diagnostic accuracy but also improvements in management, treatment, and appropriate use of ancillary tests/devices such as digital monitoring, reflectance confocal microscopy, and gene expression profiling.
This faculty-led module is part of the American Dermoscopy Certificate Program. Enrolled members watch the full lecture and claim CME credit on completion.
