Dermoscopy CME module
Approach to evaluating mucosal lesions
Presented by David Swanson, MD
Practical dermoscopic approach to oral and anogenital mucosa: optimize imaging and documentation; recognize benign single-pattern, single-color macules. Red flags include asymmetry, gray/blue/white hues, blue-white veil, irregular vessels, structural heterogeneity. Maintain a low biopsy threshold for patients >45, changing or symptomatic lesions. Distinguish pigmented Bowen, Zoon’s, psoriasis, molluscum, and venous lakes.

Learning objectives
After completing this module, you should be able to:
- Identify the features associated with melanocytic and non-melanocytic malignancies and identify the features to help differentiate them from benign lesions.
- Outline a management approach for lesions, based on their clinical and dermoscopic morphology.
- Summarize the pivotal role of Dermoscopy as the gateway not only into improved diagnostic accuracy but also improvements in management, treatment, and appropriate use of ancillary tests/devices such as digital monitoring, reflectance confocal microscopy, and gene expression profiling.
This faculty-led module is part of the American Dermoscopy Certificate Program. Enrolled members watch the full lecture and claim CME credit on completion.
