Dermoscopy CME module

Other malignant tumors: Merkel, CTCL, etc.

Presented by Ashfaq Marghoob, MD

Review of dermoscopic clues for uncommon skin cancers: Merkel cell (pink, polymorphous vessels, shiny white, no pigment; AEIOU risks), adnexal tumors (poroma/cherry-blossom vessels, extramammary Paget’s milky-red/erosions, sebaceous yellow structures), sarcomas (AFX/MFH, DFSP), angiosarcoma (ecchymosis-like, atypical lacunae), and lymphomas (CTCL spermatozoa vessels; B‑cell orange-salmon, follicular plugging). Prioritize deductive reasoning, prompt biopsy.

Learning objectives

After completing this module, you should be able to:

  • Outline a logical framework for evaluating cutaneous lesions, nail lesions, hair disorders, rashes, and infestations.
  • Identify the features associated with melanocytic and non-melanocytic malignancies and identify the features to help differentiate them from benign lesions.
  • Outline a management approach for lesions, based on their clinical and dermoscopic morphology.
  • Summarize the pivotal role of Dermoscopy as the gateway not only into improved diagnostic accuracy but also improvements in management, treatment, and appropriate use of ancillary tests/devices such as digital monitoring, reflectance confocal microscopy, and gene expression profiling.

This faculty-led module is part of the American Dermoscopy Certificate Program. Enrolled members watch the full lecture and claim CME credit on completion.
