Dermoscopy CME module

Dermoscopy in pediatric population

Presented by Elizabeth Seiverling, MD

Dermoscopy improves diagnosis and management of pediatric skin lesions. The talk reviews congenital melanocytic nevi patterns and monitoring; distinguishes mimics like café-au-lait macules; identifies vascular tumors (infantile hemangiomas) and capillary malformations with therapeutic implications; highlights the white hemangioma ulceration sign; and dermoscopic features of psoriasis versus atopic dermatitis in children.

Learning objectives

After completing this module, you should be able to:

  • Outline a logical framework for evaluating cutaneous lesions, nail lesions, hair disorders, rashes, and infestations.
  • Identify the features associated with melanocytic and non-melanocytic malignancies and identify the features to help differentiate them from benign lesions.
  • Outline a management approach for lesions, based on their clinical and dermoscopic morphology.
  • Summarize the pivotal role of Dermoscopy as the gateway not only into improved diagnostic accuracy but also improvements in management, treatment, and appropriate use of ancillary tests/devices such as digital monitoring, reflectance confocal microscopy, and gene expression profiling.

This faculty-led module is part of the American Dermoscopy Certificate Program. Enrolled members watch the full lecture and claim CME credit on completion.
